My primary vocation is writing. However, I have also served in leadership positions in several professions.
I have managed a classroom, probably one of the most difficult leadership positions I have ever held. I have been a teacher and member of the Caldwell County School Board. I taught on the high school level and also at two local community colleges.
I have worked in health care as a paramedic and hospital administrator, serving in the latter capacity as the Safety Office/Emergency Preparedness Coordinator in two hospitals. In that capacity, I was responsible for leading the hospitals through disasters, and did so numerous times.
I have worked as an editor and reporter for several daily, weekly and monthly newspapers, and has also contributed as a freelance writer to several national publications. I served as the Managing Director of Education and Communications for Wall Watchers, a North Carolina-based national donor advocacy organization. I am also the author of four books.
I have also been active in my community, serving for 10 years as a little league baseball and basketball coach, as chairman of the Caldwell County Human Relations Council, and the South Caldwell High School Human Relations Council. I am a Fellow of the North Carolina Institute of Political Leadership and Leadership Caldwell. In 2002, I received the Plott Hound Courage Award from Common Cause North Carolina for my outreach efforts to members of the North Carolina General Assembly in support of campaign finance reform.
