I am a proud ally of the LGBTQ+ community. That’s why I look forward to hearing Ginger Walker, the President of the LGBTQ+ Caucus of the North Carolina Democratic Party at the Burke County Democratic Headquarters this Saturday. During the past several years, I’ve been privileged to collaborate with both Equality NC and North Carolina-based Faith in America -- now part of the Tyler Clementi Foundation -- to help oppose legalized bigotry against those in the LGBTQ+ community.
I find it noteworthy that the greatest enemies of the LGBTQ+ community generally quote Scripture as reasons for their hateful words and behavior. Yet, it’s my belief -- and consistent with my faith tradition -- that true North Carolina values means to love
our neighbors as we love ourselves.
I worked with the two organizations above to specifically address and counter the religious-based bigotry motivating condemnation from the pulpit. As bad as that is, the intolerance displayed in those churches has guided extremist Republicans running the North Carolina General Assembly over the last several years.
Enough is enough. It’s time for a change.
I support the agenda of Equality NC. In summary, that means that as a North Carolina State Senator, I would work to ensure that laws are written to protect those in the LGBTQ+ community from violence; fight racial injustice (an ongoing issue in the Tar Heel state); comprehensive non-discrimination laws; protect youth from bullying and emotional abuse; and, continue to make the prevention of HIV/AIDS a public health priority.
If you believe that it is time for the people of Avery, Burke and Caldwell counties -- and indeed all of North Carolina -- to have a State Senator that supports the LGBTQ+ community, please visit my campaign website and consider making a contribution.
Thank you -- MB.
